The short version: sort first, survey second, book third. The estimate is built from what's actually travelling — so the family decisions about what stays, goes to relatives, or gets donated need to happen before the surveyor walks through. Get that order right and a senior move becomes an ordinary move with extra care; get it wrong and the price changes on moving day.

The sequence that works

  1. Sort by destination — travelling, family, sale, donation, disposal — room by room, weeks ahead.
  2. Schedule the donation pickups and disposal — they book out further than movers do.
  3. Then the survey, with the decision-maker present, showing only what travels.
  4. Then book — with the community's move-in rules (elevator bookings, insurance certificates) passed to the carrier in advance.

Senior move questions

How is a senior move different?
It's usually a downsizing move — decades of household compressed into a smaller home, often on a timeline set by a closing date or a community's move-in schedule. The moving part is standard; the sorting, and the emotional weight of it, is not. Build sorting time into the plan before the mover is booked, not after.
What should happen to what doesn't make the trip?
Decide the destination for every category before packing starts: family, sale, donation, disposal. Donation pickups need scheduling weeks out. A mover can pack anything — what a mover can't do is decide, and undecided items are what blow up both the timeline and the estimate.
Who should be at the survey?
The person moving, plus whoever is helping them decide. The estimate is built from what's actually going; if the surveyor sees a full house but half of it is staying, the quote — and the truck — will be wrong in the expensive direction.
