The number to stop trusting: the "$4,300 average interstate move (7,400 lbs, 1,225 miles)" cited on dozens of moving sites is pre-2020 data from a trade association that merged out of existence in 2020. No updated figure was ever published. We don't use it, and a site that does is telling you how carefully it checks its numbers.

What the quote you get will actually depend on

Weight and distance set the base. Four things move it from there: access (stairs, elevators, long carries, and streets a 70-foot rig can't enter — a shuttle truck adds real money), season (May–September runs 20–30% over winter rates), packing (full packing service can add a third to the bill), and valuation — the liability level you choose. The free level is $0.60 per pound per article, which values a 40-lb flat-screen at $24. Full value protection costs more and is usually worth it on a long move.

Why do quotes for the same move differ so much?
Because a moving quote is a prediction of weight, distance, access and season — and companies predict differently. A binding estimate after a survey of your actual belongings is a commitment; a phone estimate is a guess, and lowball phone guesses are the single most common start to a federal complaint. Get the number in writing, after a survey, with the valuation level stated.
Is that famous $4,300 average still right?
No. The '$4,300 for 7,400 lbs over 1,225 miles' figure quoted all over the internet is pre-2020 data from a trade association that no longer exists in that form. No updated version has ever been published. Any site citing it as current is copying a dead number.
What makes a move cost more than the estimate?
The big four: more weight than estimated (the surveyor never saw the garage), access problems at either end (stairs, long carries, shuttle trucks where a semi can't park), packing services added on moving day, and storage-in-transit when the delivery date slips. Each is manageable if it's priced before the truck arrives — and expensive if it's discovered after.
When is it cheapest to move long distance?
